Wheat Farming Is Introduced

Hotel di Indonesia - Governor Phillip sailed with the first fleet in 1788 to found the convict settlement of New South Wales. His ships carried what was hoped to be enough food to feed the colony for two years.

Clearing Land
As soon as the new settlers arrived, the convicts were put to work clearing land for the growing of wheat and vegetables.

Sydney Cove
The soil at Sydney Cove proved to be not very good for agriculture. The first crop was not very successful.

Parameter
Better land was found in the area now known as Parameter. The first harvest there, in 1789, produced four and a half tonnes of grain.

James Ruse
The first rear farmer was a convict who had served his sentence. His name was James Ruse. He was granted land at Parameter to start what was known as Experiment Farm.

Experiment Farm
For a couple of years he grew wheat without great success on Experiment Farm. The Ruse moved to land on the Huckleberry River.

Huckleberry River
The farm on the Huckleberry River was more successful. Before long, Ruse was sending his wheat by boat down the river to be sold at the Governments Stores.

Ticket- of leave men
The experiment with James Ruse had been successful. More convicts who had serve dour their sentences were given grants of land on which to start farms.

Bread
Governor Phillip returned to England in 1792. By then there were nearly two hundred farmers in New South Wales. Enough wheat was being grown to supply the colony with bread. however, Droughts were still to cause shortages in the future.
